TOPIC: Little Help Needed

Little Help Needed 3 months, 2 weeks ago #34751

hey friends!

i was wondering how to make a twin motor plane i.e with two separate motors. The question is

1: how many ESC would be required and how to control these ESC with on channel only?

2: can only one ESC be used? in that case, how to connect two motors supplies

3: how to control the yaw moment using the motors only ( without using rudder )

4: do the motors have to spin in opposite directions to kill each others moment?

plz help me out!

Please check out this thread.

You can use a V-tail mixer if you have a 4 Ch radio. If your radio has 6 or 7 channels and Programmable Mixing then you can mix from the Tx as well.
Check out my report on a twin engined plane in the NAS field thread.

Yaw control with engine rpm variation is not recommended. If to counteract yaw, the power of one motor is reduced, the thrust is reduced as well and a spiral can occur if the plane is at low speed. It is better to have an effective rudder anyway.

It is not necessary to have contra-rotating props. Most full sized planes have both engines turning in one direction only and heading correction is given by slight rudder.

The HK 6 Ch radio does not have mixing, I think. The mixer is an electronic device that mixes the functions of two channels. e.g.

rudder and elevator for V-tail planes
aileron and elevator for Elevon controlled planes
throttle and rudder in Twins

The GWS is one of the better mixers around.

In this configuration, the two ESCs are connected to the throttle channel with a Y connector. If the ESCs and the motors have identical operating characteristics, then there would be no Yaw issues when the throttle is applied. However, in case both motors are not matched then one motor would produce more thrust and there would no way to correct it except to give opposite rudder trim which is not the best way.

Do note that the red wire has been disabled in one of the ESCs so that only one ESC powers the Rx and servos.

I think this Tx is programmed via the computer so I cannot be of much help. I did note that it has 3 mixes but would it be possible to mix throttle and rudder? That I don't know.

The link to a manual of a similar radio is here:

Here is another demonstration of the Exceed radio on Youtube. They look the same.

Hope it works for you.
