I have been reading and discussing upgrading the OEM (Stock) piston rings of my gas engines with the Bowman rings. When it comes to upgrade the rings or look for rings which may not be available anywhere else, the only one name comes to mind is Mr Bowman (the Ringmaster). I thought I will share this here in case someone needs help. He is in New Mexico, makes custom rings, upgraded stock rings for the common engines and yes he ships international anywhere in the world.

This is what he says about his rings:

"I have been a machinest all my working life and making Custon Piston Rings for approx. 15+ years for Gas, Glow and diesel engines, some motorcycles too. With my custom rings, performance will improve over nearly all factory rings because of the material I use, machining method I use and Ring gap I recomend with my rings. I use fine grained cast iron machined from solid round bar stock rough cut on OD to .010 oversized and finished with a .002 finish cut on OD for accuracy. OD of ring is cylinder bore to assure ring fit is correct and round rather than making ring larger than bore and shinking oversized ring after saw cut into smaller bore. Rings are then hand lapped to .001 smaller than piston ring land. I don't saw cut ring, I have a special tool that snaps ring before heat treat at 1,850 degrees F. After heat treating on mandrels I gap ring to .001 to .002 end gap. Rule of thumb in machinest world on cast iron rings is .001 to .0015 ring gap per 1" bore diameter. I make bore gage to .0001 of cylinder bore to gap rings & ship all over the world. I make over 300+ rings and to date made thousands with a lot of happy customers. There is a lot more involved in my manufacturing process along with a lot of tooling involved, too much to discuss here. If I don't currently have dimensions to make rings for certain engines a lot of customers send the piston & cylinder to me to measure for rings & I install rings for no extra charge. I make special rings for 30 CC Homelite & 31 CC Ryobi engines that require a slight mod. of cutting anti rotation pin in ring groove down 1/2 way so my custom rings will overlap pin for much improved performance. Most rings for Gase engines $11 ea. shipped to most countries & US at $14 for 1 & $24 for 2 shipped. Discounts of $1 off per ring on orders of 10 or more mixed sizes & Brands fine. I have been endorsed many times by engine builders like Clarence Lee, Joe Wagner in magazines, etc. Email me if you have additional questions and a list of custom rings that I currently have in stock.

Thanks & God Bless all".

Here he answers to a question why his rings should perform better than stock rings.

"My rings should be better than original factory because when I make them I heattreat rings with lower tension. This is because my rings are round and I don't need to put a lot of tension to seat ring because it is round. Factory rings have more tension to seat ring, but also wears them out sooner and heats engine more. Where I'm going is with less tension larger port not much of a problem as long as rings are pinned so ring gap doesn't go into open port window. Remember less tension, less heat & ring lasts longer with less chance of over heating".

The best way to contact him for any question or order is his email:

Here is a very useful mode Mr Bowman shared.

Gas Engine Reed Block Mod.

"I found that on the rear intake's there is a Black plastic or Aluminum reed block between engine & carb. It has a flange on it for mounting to flat carb & engine surface and reed part is triangular shaped. The reed block surfaces are not flat and reeds in some cases don't lay perfectly flat against block. The gasket surfaces often times are not flat either and need to be sanded down to flatten. In some reed blocks there are 2 screws that go thru a steel plate that holds reed to surface. On other reed blocks the screws just go through holes in reeds. Remove screws and reeds from block, then file or hone metal plates if supplied flat as 1 side will have burrs from having been punched out and holed not drilled. Next tape down 320 grit sandpaper to edge of really flat surface, table top, edge of thick piece of glass, etc. Because of the lip on plastic block, let that part hang over edge and pull plastic or Aluminum block across paper to flatten. Repeat on other surface until the surface is flat. It won't take much so no need to get carried away. Next deburr the 4 screw holes as screws tend to pull plastic up in screw holes. Remount screws thru plate & reed or just reeds. Make sure reed is totally flat, if not remove screws again and turn reed over and reinstall screws. Screws will strip easily so if you have lock tite you can put a tiny bit on screws to secure & tighten gently. What this affects is idle, engine will be hard starting as if 1 or both reeds are open ever so slightly, fuel won't be drawn up to carb and stay there. If reeds are open it never will pull a vacuum to draw fuel and hold fuel at carb.

Thanks

Frank Bowman"

One of his quote from my recent communication with him.

"I have both of the DA 50 and DA 50-R engine rings as well as the 60, 85, 150 & 170 twins. There is a slight difference in the earlier 50-100 cylinder bore than later 50-R & 100 cylinders & pistons so will need to know which you have. Older DA 50 & 100 twin cylinder bore: 42.697 mm. Later 50-R & 100 twin 42.62 mm bore. I have all of the DLE rings except the new 35 cc but will have rings for them soon".

My DLE 55 in my Pilot RC Yak 54 was giving me starting problems (flooding) so I though it is a good time for a carburetor rebuild. Rebuilt the carburetor with a new Walbro kit. While doing the rebuild, I have also changed the old ring with a new Bowman ring which I ordered a while ago.

Put together everything and started the engine. Engine popped with the choke on third flip and started without the choke on exactly the third flip. Noted the old needle low and high settings and kept the same. The engine ran beautifully with just a notch of lean. Made it slightly rich and got a nice transition, good idle and no hesitation from low to high and high to low. Restarted it a few times and every time started with one flip. Will put the cowl and will test fly it over the weekend. Happy with the rebuild and the new ring.

I also thought about the reed valve mod but mine looked to me in good shape and nicely flat so I did not mess with it.

Have been reading about the Bowman rings on various DLE threads on RC Groups. Appears the DLE and other less expensive engines should benefit the most from these rings because of QC issues at times. But the problem is how to get them here. A workable solution would be for a LHS to stock these rings for the popular DLE engines here.

The solution that you have mentioned is a workable solution. I think the most popular gas engines in Pakistan are the DLEs, so getting ring stock of 30, 55 and 111 would make a lot of sense and would sell quickly. The rings are not that expansive and buying a dozen of each for a hobby shop should be an easy transaction.

I can talk to Frank if any of the hobby shop is interested in getting these or they can directly contact him. He is a very nice guy and responds to queries immediately.

Add rings for the DLE 20 to the list. The rings for DLE 111 should be the same as DLE 55.
I'll talk to Shigri sb to see if he's receptive to the idea.

Correct, the DLE 55 rings will also work in DLE 111.

Let me know if I can help with anything.

To update about the ring upgrade I did on my Yak 54 - DLE 55

I flew it this past Saturday and it flew like it has a different engine. As suggested by Frank that his rings in a used engine will not need to go through the break-in process again so I have not changed the prop or the fuel mix.

The engine ran with excellent idle, nice and consistent strokes, smooth transition and with a visible improvement in its thrust and vertical performance. One other thing I have noticed is a little more vibration which caused me loosing one canopy bolt (I use rubber backed washers on all bolts) after I landed. Could it be due to the engine running much stronger than before or is it time to rebalance the prop?

Salam,
When a engine breaks in the ring and cylinder wear together. In a new engine the cylinder is bored with 30* cross hatches, this does two things, it holds oil and acts as a file. As the harder ring moves up and down, it wears the cylinder wall to shape the ring. The ring wears some but not as the cylinder. when the cross hatch is gone the cylinder is smooth the engine is considered broke in.
In your case the ring will wear to the cylinder, this will happen real fast, This may be the reason for some vibration. should go away in a few flights. Check the prop balance, and check the prop nuts to make sure they are tight.
My thoughts..... B)

You need to concider this, The quality control of the engine new. How round was the ring? The manufacture has to move the product out the door and they have a tolerance to go by. What is there executable tolerance? New cars have very strict tolerance and are considered broke in from the factory. We all know that there is some break in but the machining and metallurgy are top notch these days. That is what the guy from ringmaster is doing making sure the rings are perfect, there is little wear needed to break in because his tolerance is very tight.
You pay dearly for tighter tolerance. German made verse Chinese.

If I due go gas, I will install a ringmaster ring before I ever start the engine. I will get max life of the engine for doing so. B) Thanks Salam for all of this, good stuff.
